NEW!! Using Composition and Creativity to
Improve Your Art
with Nicole Kennedy

How many times have completed a painting that was "technically" good but there was just something missing? Or maybe it just didn't "come to life" as you intended. When this happens, 90% of the time it is due to the composition, design and layout that you start with! Nicole will start by covering all of the elements you need to consider before even starting your painting. Then she will shift the focus to CREATIVITY, the part where "you" come in. Discover and explore the concepts of creative finesse, those ever-important final touches that add extra dimension and beauty to the final product.

TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE:

• Analyzing your photo for cropping and choosing big shapes
• Addressing composition, design and layout of paintings before you start
The importance of shapes & value dominance and focal points as an integral part to the design
• Creative choices once you are halfway through to help bring the painting to life
• Importance of brushstrokes, color choices and most especially using your intuition for creativity

When you start with a strong composition it helps "ground" your painting and allows you to focus on greater creativity and "magic" as you develop the piece. Everyone should bring their favorite photo to paint in the class, you will focus on one painting during class.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:
Anyone who has been painting for awhile or has taken the Beginner class plus one or two other workshops.

Painting Luminosity and Color in Water and Skies
with David Dunlop

David Dunlop is a modern day old master whose luminous landscapes draw from both Renaissance techniques and contemporary science. His paintings have been shown internationally and are held in the collections of major corporations from Citibank, Delta Airlines, GE and IBM. He had a PBS Television series called "Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop" which won a 2009 Emmy Award. David is represented by galleries across the US and is a very highly sought after instructor and lecturer. We are thrilled to host David here at Nicole's Studio!!

David's reputation as a painter who combines artistic skill, knowledge and enthusiasm prompted the Metropolitan Museum of Art to invite him to lecture. Don't miss out on your chance to study with someone whose exhaustive knowledge of painting is also matched with a humble and encouraging teaching style.

This 3-day workshop will have a daily combination of lecture and slides (2-3 hours), demo (2 hours or more, in both oil and acrylic) and student painting. The following topics will be covered:

• Water: capture the motion, color, forms and evanexcent effects of waves, waterfalls, moving stream and tidepools. Learn how past masters of the seascape captured the sensations of waves collapsing on sand, crashing on rocks. Learn how to create the reflections, transluscence and sparkle of water.

• Skies: Discover how to render skies in the tender light of dawn, the pageant of sunset and dramatic seizures of approaching storms. David will show you how to glaze, multi-layer and mix colors to catch the effects of moving clouds and ephemeral light. He will show you how the past masters created luminous and dramatic skies.

• Color: A comprehensive study of all aspects of color from historic to contemporary painting. Color constancy, shading, color scale, glare, reflections and other topics will be covered. David will demonstrate how differently you percieve color under various light effects, from twilight to mid-day. Pearlescence, brilliance, translusence, trasparency, reflectivity and the tint and tone of color will all be addressed in addition to achieving them across different mediums.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This class is appropriate for
most levels except very beginner. Please feel free to contact Nicole or Kelly if you have questions about whether this class is appropriate for you.

To Paint Your Favorite Structure You Need to Start with the Perfect Drawing with Dan Nelson

Have you ever done a painting and felt something wasn't right about the house or the angle of the boat? No matter how well you paint, if your drawing is off, the final painting is off.

We all have a favorite house, barn, street scene or even a boat that we would love to paint--when you start with an accurate drawing, you will spend more time painting and less time problem-solving and fixing mistakes.

This class will help you tackle one of the most challenging issues in painting...drawing and perspective. Dan will spend the first couple of hours teaching you the basics concepts of accurate drawing and perspective, helping each student individually. Then you will move to painting and work on angles, shadows, values, colors and the elimination of details.

Dan Nelson, a former designer illustrator and renowned painter of Raleigh scenes, is the quintessential instructor to take you through this process.

Please bring in your photo of a structure or object. If you don't have a photo, the gallery can provide one for you.

Topics covered:
• Training your brain to draw what it sees rather than what it thinks it sees!
• Basics of persepective
• Blocking in the underlying painting with oil (or acrylic)
• Simplifying the details
• Understanding color, values and brushwork as it relates to your structure

INTENDED AUDIENCE: ANYONE who would like to improve their drawing and painting skills.
Whether you have just started to paint, or you have been painting a long time and
feel your paintings don't quite look "right"

Learn how to Control Color and Value to Create Better Paintings
with Nicole Kennedy

After years of teaching, Nicole realized that most of her students, from beginner to advanced struggle with basically the same two issues: color and value relationships. Finally she offers this class to help everone get it straight once and for all!!

Value seems like a simple concept; light to dark....until you assign a color to a value and that's when the trouble begins. What value is that bright blue? What is the value difference between the forefround tree to the background mountain? What is the intensity shift? Is the shadow of the boat darker lighter than the water? How much contrast is too much or to little?

From low intensity to high key, values within one color family can be difficult to grasp, but when you start placing them beside objects of other colors, and thinking about the relationships of all the colors and values in your painting to each other, that's when you REALLY need to understand the fundamentals.

If you are serious about learning to paint, or have been painting awhile but aren't getting the results you want, this class is a MUST!

Peggi Kroll Roberts
In Class we will:
• Look at photos to understand color as a value
• Take a black and white photo & paint in color
• Do some color mixing exercises to identify their values (this is fun)
• Learn how to mix high key and low key palettes
• We will also do a small painting (or two) or two using color/value principles to achieve the results you want

Painting FIGURES and STILL LIFE--
Inside & Out
with Peggi Kroll Roberts
American Impressionist Society Master Painter (AISM) & Nationally Recognized Artist
/Instructor

Peggi Kroll Roberts in internationally renowned for her joyful figures and still life paintings. She taught at Nicole's Studio in 2012 and 2013 and we have plans to bring her back again in late 2014 or early 2015. Stay tuned!

Peggi worked as a fashion illustrator before making the transition into fine art. Using intense color and value to accentuate her subject, she moved into fine art with a bold palette, a love for small paintings and a very loose style that achieves much with few but energetic brushstrokes. She prefers to suggest reality rather than render it.

Peggi has been teaching for over 25 years and students rave about how much they learn in her workshop. A recent student had this to say about Peggi's workshop: "Part of the journey of being an artist is to never stop learning. Sometimes that journey is more rewarding than others...Peggi Kroll Roberts falls under the category of a great teacher. She is generous with her knowledge and gives the student the tools to move to another level".

Day 1 will be spent indoors painting still life. Days 2 and 3 will be spent painting models (clothed) both inside and out, weather permitting. Course cost includes model fees.

Intended Audience: Anyone except beginning students. Please call the gallery if you have questions.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This class is appropriate for
intermediate to advanced and professional painters. Please feel free to contact Nicole.
