Painting Oil on Canvas For Beginners -
with Dan Nelson

Anyone who thinks they cannot paint, needs to paint with Dan! Learn some simple steps to help you feel confident to tackle your first oil on canvas painting. This class is designed to take the "intimidation" out of beginner painting.

The following basics will be covered:
• You will learn the essentials of color mixing
• Dan will cover the basics on drawing your image onto the canvas
• Learn how to apply paint in layers from loose to more detailed
• Composition basics and light/ dark values
• We will work from objects and a photo

You do NOT need to bring any photos, the gallery will provide the material from which you will be painting, including objects & a photo.

Beginning Oil Painting - Level II

We created this class as a follow-up to the Beginning Oil Painting class. You have learned the very basics and now this workshop will help you develop the confidence you need to start a painting on your own.


The following topics will be covered:
• Color mixing, the next step -- and the importance of harmonizing your colors.
• How to choose appropriate subject matter (photos, still life etc.)
• Basic drawing skills
• Eliminating details and focusing on what makes a good painting
• Basic painting composition

Students will not be painting from their own photos in this class, Nicole will provide material from which to paint

Colors, Composition & Creativity
with Nicole Kennedy

Forget the 4 C's of diamonds, these 3 C's are far more important....And more fun! This class encompasses basically every aspect of what can make a good painting better. A painting with great composition & bad colors can turn out OK but a painting with great colors & bad composition will never work! Come find out why....


Topics covered include:
• Harmony of colors and the difference between vibrant and garish, and how to avoid the dreaded "mud"
• Composition - you've done everything right, but your painting still doesn't sing, learn how dramatic composition can make a painting come alive
• Creativity - Exciting or boring, the choice is yours. This workshop helps you move towards excitement!

"How to Turn Your Favorite Photograph Into a Painting" -

You just got back from a trip and would like to paint a masterpiece from your photos. Come learn why this photo to the right is NOT a good choice to paint from...

Dan Nelson is a fantastic teacher. It doesn't matter what topic he teaches at the studio, students take so much away from the experience. In this exciting new class Dan will show students how to take the right photo and turn it into a painting. Topics include:

• How to choose photos based on their light values and their key to the success of your painting.
• Pushing your values to create drama and interest
• and finally, putting the photo aside and doing what's best for the painting!

Cloudscapes in Pastel
with Diana Coidan

Diana Coidan is an award winning pastel artist, well known for her amazing clouds. Come and find out Diana's secret for capturing the stunning beauty that nature paints in our skies...

This workshop you will learn the basics of creating a spectacular sky with cloud variations that can be a standalone painting or incorporated into landscapes. Diana will guide you through the many types of clouds from the downy white cumulus to dense sea smoke. Learn how to capture the excitement of the world above with soft pastels in this FUN workshop.
Topics include:


• Introduction to pastels.
• Descriptive cloud formations
• Cloud demo followed by individual cloud paintings guided start to finish by the instructor

Glow Like the Masters
with Dan Nelson

Dan shares his tips on how to make your paintings "glow" like renaissance artwork in this workshop.

Dan Nelson is a professional painter from Raleigh who has developed a style over the years that makes his paintings "glow". This technique was created through much experimentation and hard work and Dan would like to share his experience, to help you give your paintings that glow!

Topics covered include:
• Using layers to achieve a glow in your paintings
• Using brighter and more intense colors without losing control of your painting
• Making your paintings colorful withouth creating "chaos"
• How to make your paintings more harmonious

This class ongoing class is designed for students who feel comfortable painting with a moderate amount of guidance or instruction and bring their own materials. Students paint in both palette knife and brush

First time students paint from materials (photo) provided by Rocky while more intermediate students may bring their own photos from which to paint, or Rocky can provide photos appropriate to your skill level. .

Bringing the Freshness of "En Plein Air" into Your Paintings with Lori Putnam

Lori Putnam's work displays the freshness and vigor that only a plein air (outdoor) painter can bring to a painting. But if painting outdoors isn't your cup of tea, Lori will share her secrets and help you bring some of that freshness into your studio (indoor) paintings. This 2 day workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate painters who understand basic color mixing, some composition and the critical use of light and dark values. Both days will be spent kicking what you know about each of these up to a new level!

Understanding the Power of Composition with Lori Putnam

We've all done it -- You find the perfect photo to paint and in your mind you are already making up that perfect blue for the sky before you even start to draw. And in that haste to get those gorgeous colors on the canvas, you scrimp on the composition and it ends up wrecking the painting.

Lori will teach you how good composition can make a fair painting EXCEPTIONAL. You will learn the juxtaposition of shapes and colors in relationship to each other in order to create drama, harmony, serenity and depth in your work.

Go Big with Your Canvas!
with Nicole Kennedy

Nicole finally let's you in on secret techniques to painting larger.

Create a large painting (or two) in 2 sessions from Start to Finish. You will experiment with new techniques to help advance your painting skills to the next level by getting the structure right. Start by using charcoal, acrylics (3 basic colors) then sponges, value painting, oils (acrylics OK too), brushes and a palette knife for finishing touches.

You will work from still life or from one of your photos (or photos provided by Nicole). Bring in as many photo options as possible so we can choose the one that is right for you to paint!

Please bring a canvas 16 x 20 or larger.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This is not a first time beginning painting class. You have had some experence painting in the past year. This is a great class for strong beginner -advanced students who want to loosen up and let go!!

Painting Without Drawing!
with Nicole Kennedy

Approach The Subject Matter in a Completely Fresh Point of View!

How did many of the old masters paint? By painting the shapes of light and dark, and the shapes of colors...watch by magic as a painting emerges, without drawing a line!! By focusing on shapes that make up an image, you will train yourself to look at things in a new way. Over time with practice you will become a more confident painter. A great class to take as a warm-up for 'en plein air". No matter what your level, you will get something out of this class.

Color Mixing: Theory & Basics -

Finally a class that starts at the basics and teaches you all about color mixing and the importance of hues, values, compliments, color juxtaposition and warm versus cool temperatures, and cast shadow colors--all elements that are essential to problem solving in every painting. Topics include:

• How to create a color wheel
• Essential Color exercises
• Breakdown of a simple still life to understand basic color components and subtleties

INTENDED AUDIENCE: ANYONE who has been taking art classes and would like to improve their understanding of color and it's uses. This class would be an especially good follow-up for Beginning Oil Painting and/or Beginning Oil Level II

This one day workshop is designed to help students "loosen up" in their painting, because no one ever says:

Cathy Martin's approach to simplifying subject matter and extracting the color and vibrancy allows her to paint loose and energetic paintings that draw the viewer in. Cathy has been teaching for over 30 years and has a wealth of experience to share with her students. In this workshop Cathy will share how her style has evolved into "loose and fun" over the years.

Jonathan Peedin studied at the Arts Students League in NYC and is known around the Triangle as a phenomenal figurative painter and great instructor. Jonathan will demonstrate the play of light and shadow out of which evolves a face or form. The use of measurements, formulas are tossed out in favor of direct sight practice and understanding the properties of light. Masters like Sargent, Chase & Kinstler are major influences in his method. "

Buildings can be a lot of fun to paint, but until you understand the basics of architecture and the notion of "perspective". This class will teach you how to paint buildings that aren't crooked or leaning (unless you are painting the Tower in Pisa!)

• Doors and windows, how to make them work in your painting
